How to buy Ukrainian government bonds (ОВГЗ)

Buying ОВГЗ no longer requires visiting a bank branch or signing paper contracts. For most retail investors the entire process — opening a securities account, passing identification, and placing an order — happens inside a banking app in a single evening.

Where retail investors buy ОВГЗ

The most common route is a Ukrainian bank's brokerage feature — Privat24, monobank Invest, or Sense SuperApp — which lets you buy government bonds in a few taps. The alternative is a licensed investment broker, which typically offers a wider selection of maturities and access to larger lots.

Step by step

The flow is the same almost everywhere: open a securities account with your bank or broker, complete identification (KYC), fund the account, choose a bond by its ISIN, and place the order. Settlement credits the bonds to your account; from then on coupons arrive automatically on schedule.

Primary auctions vs the secondary market

New ОВГЗ are sold at primary auctions held by the Ministry of Finance. Between auctions, bonds trade on the secondary market, where prices move with interest rates and demand — so the yield you lock in can differ from the coupon. Banking apps usually give access to the secondary market; some brokers also pass client orders to primary auctions.

What to check before you buy

Three parameters matter most: the currency (UAH, USD, or EUR), the maturity date (when you get the nominal back), and the yield to maturity at your purchase price — not just the coupon. Check the payment schedule too: it tells you exactly when the cash arrives.

Our catalog lets you filter bonds by currency and maturity and sort them by yield — use it to shortlist ISINs before opening your banking app.

Who can buy

Ukrainian residents — both individuals and companies — buy ОВГЗ freely through banks and brokers. Foreign investors can also hold ОВГЗ, typically through international depositories or local custodians; the practical route depends on your jurisdiction and broker.
